Legalize pot. Debate me.?
Im just looking for someone to debate. I, for one, am completely for the legalization of marijuana. Give me any reason why Marijuana SHOULDNT be legal and i will shoot it down. Marijuana is a deadly drug. - No, it is physically impossible to overdose on Marijuana. Well, Marijuana may lead teens to make potentially deadly decisions, such as getting into a car. - Thats exactly why we SHOULD legalise it. In fact, as a teenager, i can say that it is easier to get a couple grams of weed than it is a six pack of bud. Because alcohol sale is REGULATED and prohibited for those under 21. Therefore, you legalize and REGULATE Marijuana; start selling it at gas stations and "coffee shops", and slowly "drug dealers" go out of business, and it becomes harder to get a hold of. Meaning LESS teenage "Marijuana related" deaths Marijuana is addictive. - Phsychologically yes. But so is sex. So is reading. Tv, video games. EVERYTHING is, at some level, phsychologically addictive. What Marijuana ISNT, is PHYSICALLY addictive. Alcohol and Tobacco, both legal substances, are physically addictive. And yet they are legal. Every blunt you smoke funds South American drug cartels. - If you legalize, and regulate of course, the growth and production of Marijuana, then we can buy our weed knowing that we helped farmer jon earn a living, as opposed to having to buy it from the evil gangs. Marijuana kills brain cells. - So does holding your breath. I equate this argument to the "nana nana boo boo, im right your wrong" argument that my little sister says all the time. This is merely meant to be an end all argument for the completely misinforment anti-drug campaign. Marijuana contains cancer causing chemicals. - Radios, cellphones, televisions and microwaves all emit waves into the atmosphere that can cause cancer. The preservatives contained in 90% of the foods in a typical americans diet cause cancer. Drinking from a water fountain causes cancer. Cancer is an inevitable part of American society. Everything causes cancer. If you live long enough to avoid dying of another cause, you will eventually develop cancer. Seeing as Marijuana has not been proven to DIRECTLY CAUSE or ACCELERATE any known cancer, Such as tobacco being linked to lung cancer and emphysema I do not feel as if "Carcinogens" are a strong enough basis for illegalization. Its just a drug. You take it to escape reality. - Yes, that is also why people read books, watch movies, tv. Once again, an illegitimate argument present by a nonsense filled, propagandized, anti-drug campaign. Im kinda getting tired so im gonna stop. Is PBDE exposure something to be worried about?
The term PBDEs refers to a class of chemicals used for decades as fire retardants, found in vehicles, airplanes, virtually any furniture with foam in it, carpet padding, and electronics. Known to bioaccumulate in humans and animals, theyve been long banned in Europe, although in America were only outlawed in 2004, and go figure, can still be used in imported goods. Recent studies look them up via wiki or google published this year have correlated women with higher blood serum levels with infertility and trouble conceiving, while both childhood and prenatal resulted in significant developmental delays - neurological and physical, but mostly neurological - and up to a five to eight point IQ loss, which basically means that PBDEs are practically as bad as lead. Whats worse, is that American levels continue to rise each year because our houses and our foods are all so saturated with these chemicals, and were nearing the same levels that caused thyroid and liver mutations/cancers in lab animals. Does this not alarm anyone else? PBDEs work in subtle and difficult to detect ways; who knows how many children from recent generations are suffering brain damage from PBDEs? One drop was all it took to permanently brain damage and alter the behavior of exposed mice. And to anyone educated on this subject, I pose a question that pertains to myself: Whereas normal chemical exposure goes, I dont worry myself; its inevitable, and living in society means were subject to being slowly poisoned by a toxic brew of who knows what and thats fine as weve all got a share in it, but I dont wanna end up being one of those people with levels that are off the charts. I practice MMA and train on an old carpet from the early 80s, and its all torn up and the padding is exposed in many areas. Its fairly cushioned unlike most carpet paddings, but nevertheless it seems to be rebond, which is a type of padding made up of tons of bits of recycled foams from a host of sources other carpet pads, vehicle seats, furniture cushions. I love training there, but should I fear that this regular contact with the padding we practice barefoot can cause insanely high levels of PBDEs in my blood? After all, carpet recyclers, when tested, showed some of the highest blood levels of PBDEs found in any group ever studied. If anyone could recommend what to do here, thanks.

Despite criticisms, has Obama got it right?
Obama has done more for future generations then a president has in a long time. I dont think anyone realizes the impact his presidency will have on all future generations. It will provide a more educated group of citizens....more people will go to grad school bc of the new funding and not having the scare of having to go off of health care at age 22. I think the general population can feel more comfortable that if anything ever happens to them, insurance companies will not be able to deny them health care because they have a preexisting condition which bankrupts most families. Overall we will have a far more healthy society because with health care comes prevention...every dollar spent preventing something is worth millions trying to treat something that has already happened. If only we could attack the fast food and tobacco industry. However it would cut capitalism to the core. We will never get rid of an obese society with bucket size soft drinks. Portion control is key. We will never stop people from smoking by increasing taxes and regulating advertisements...a pin through the heart of the tobacco industry is regulating the additives and all of the chemicals that are put in to get people addicted. At some point our philosophy of capitalism should be adapted for the betterment of the people while still preserving the American dream. Thoughts? In what ways do you think Obama has got it right?

Answer: These unfortunate results were apart of a big-scale agenda. Womens lib was funded by the Rockefellers for two main purposes: 1 They could now tax women. 2 They could get children into school at an earlier age and indoctrinate them how to think. They would be less influenced by their parents, and mainly influenced by the government through school officials and the media. Feminism is a "divide and conquer" technique. The goal was to break up the family unit, and they have succeeded. Without families, there are no communities. Power can much more easily be gained. A nation without strong morals can be easily taken over.

China scientists find use for cigarette butts HONG KONG Reuters – Chemical extracts from cigarette butts -- so toxic they kill fish -- can be used to protect steel pipes from rusting, a study in China has found. In a paper published in the American Chemical Societys bi-weekly journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, the scientists in China said they identified nine chemicals after immersing cigarette butts in water. They applied the extracts to N80, a type of steel used in oil pipes, and found that they protected the steel from rusting. "The metal surface can be protected and the iron atoms further dissolution can be prevented," they wrote. The chemicals, including nicotine, appear to be responsible for this anti-corrosion effect, they added. The research was led by Jun Zhao at Xian Jiaotong Universitys School of Energy and Power Engineering and funded by Chinas state oil firm China National Petroleum Corporation. Corrosion of steel pipes used by the oil industry costs oil producers millions of dollars annually to repair or replace. According to the paper, 4.5 trillion cigarette butts find their way into the environment each year. Apart from being an eyesore, they contain toxins that can kill fish. "Recycling could solve those problems, but finding practical uses for cigarette butts has been difficult," the researchers wrote. China, which has 300 million smokers, is the worlds largest smoking nation and it consumes a third of the worlds cigarettes. Nearly 60 percent of men in China smoke, puffing an average of 15 cigarettes per day. Recycling is the answer to a lot of things but a lot of people are just too lazy to bother. My neighbor will not recyle her cans, etc. because once, just once, the garbage guys left a can and did not pick it up. Very annoying - So the Earth suffers because she was angry over one single can. I told her that. Shes just lazy. Hey Anne - feeling a bit guilty are you? I never called anyone names. I asked if smokers would recycle their butts. I mentioned no names at all. I said some people are just too lazy to recycle. Truth hurts? This is where people are wrong - one person can make a difference either way. One person here and there adds up. If you have children - I hope they appreciate the world they will live in that you have helped contribute to.
Answer: I think its a great idea...if it works like they said 15 cigarettes a day? thats is a lot i think theyll have cigar butts to spare. and about the recycle dilemma with your neighbor there has been occasions when all that recycled trash just ends up in the same facilities as the rest non-recycable material.

American Chemical Society Chem I Exam???? How hard?
Can you guys give me any advice and let me know about your experience with it. How did it compare to your chapter exams given by your instructor? I am so nervous What should I concentrate on when reviewing?
Answer: The calculations arent usually terribly difficult; its written with the time limit in mind. The "concept" questions trip students up at least as often. If you can find a practice test, try to take that - set yourself a time limit so you can get a feel for the pace also. Theres exams out on the internet, or at least my students found some. If youve got time to order it through the mail, the ACS prepares a review guide that gives more detail. Likely subjects: Gas laws, basic thermodynamics, measurement and units including scientific notation, prefixes, unit conversions, stoichiometry and balanced equations, the mole, the basics of atomic structure nucleus & electrons, also electron configuration and the quantum numbers, bonding ionic, covalent, Lewis dot structures, identify bond order, molecular geometry, hybrid orbitals. For thermo: A lot books now are splitting it up into 2 chapters, one on enthalpy and heat transfer, the second covering entropy and Gibbs free energy. Im not sure how this affects the ACS chem 1 exam. Typically the question itself contains any specific constants or other data you might need - enthalpy values, densities, etc., so dont waste your time memorizing those. Do know the basic equations like the ideal gas law
