I am going into UBC Vancouver this years and have already my First years set up, I am essntially going and taking my Major in science in the stream of, Cognitive Science: Computational Intelligence and Design. With this I also meshed Japanese into my schedule, getting the full intensive course in both first and second semesters, a total of 12/38 Credits. I dont plan on not taking it for the other years, I plan on taking as much as I need to successfully get into a Japanese Graduate school to take my Masters, being one of the best methods in my opinion to get my foot in the door in this career field. Roughly This is what I am planning on taking over the 4 Years of attending UBC. I have worked it out and there is still room in all cases for the rest of my required courses 1st Year: Credits: Intensive Beginning Japanese I 6 Intensive Beginning Japanese II 6 2nd Year: Intensive Intermediate Japanese I 6 Intensive Intermediate Japanese II 6 3rd Year: Advanced Modern Japanese: Reading and Writing I 3 Advanced Modern Japanese: Conversation and Composition I 3 Advanced Modern Japanese: Reading and Writing II 3 Advanced Modern Japanese: Conversation and Composition II 3 4th Year: Readings in Modern Japanese Essays 3 Readings in Modern Japanese Literature 3 Advanced Oral Communication I 3 Advanced Oral Communication II 3 Newspaper Japanese I 3 Newspaper Japanese II 3

Is there anything in the human brain that makes people predisposed to want religion in their lives?
Because humans do not know the reason why we are here do you think that religion came about to make a settlement in the mind, to stop the big questions and confusion, to have hope and comfort that there is some meaningful purpose for our existence? What role does cognition or reason play? Is belief due to 1 the fact that people have not been exposed to factual criticisms of their faith and there is cognitive misinformation? Or 2 are there non cognitive impulses or genetic explanations at work? What do you think about these two articles who say there is and isnt a "God spot" in the brain http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/belief-and-the-brains-god-spot-1641022.html http://www.livescience.com/health/060829_god_spot.html
Answer: I think there is something in us that knows there are realities beyond what we can experience with our senses. I think most people were born with an innate knowledge that there is something bigger behind the things of the material world, and that force is all good and all powerful. With some people, maybe that knowledge gets covered up with carp from their childhood, or drowned in solipsistic ideas early on, or gets associated with the hateful, narrow perversions that go under the name of Christianity, but have nothing to do with it: Calvinism, blind faith fundamentalism, legalism, political conservatism, etc. Religion is supposed to be a tool for accessing and exploring that reality behind the material world. Sadly, when the "isms" take over under the guise of Christianity, religion becomes an end in itself and basically idolatry, where people worship their ideas about God instead of God Himself.

My Major? Please Answer ?
okay im considering majoring in Biology genetics, Biochemistry, Cognitive Psychology, or Oncology something in the science field, i know all these are somewhat different but they all interest me. i was wondering do you think it will be easy to get a career with one of these degrees? i dont want to waste my time, and be in debt after college lol i plan on getting a doctoral degree in one of these
Answer: Its going to be hard to get a job with any of these degrees without advanced study beyond a bachelors degree, so consider that when youre planning. OK, so if youre planning on getting a doctorate, thats good. You should decide whether you want an MD or a PhD first. You dont need to declare a major right away, so if you talk to your college counselor when you go, they can tell you what science classes to start taking, a lot of the 101 level classes will be common for most of those majors... and psych is usually a 101 core class that will fulfill a graduation requirement. Once youve gotten your feet wet a little freshman year, you can decide which one interests you most. Dont make a decision without getting a taste first. You dont want to choose a majo and decide junior year you regret it and have to set yourself back a year or two. Take your time. And your college advisor is a really valuable resource, make sure you take advantage

Books to read before college?
Hello Im an entering first-year freshman at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Im leaving for Brown on August 21st or a pre-preorientation program. This program for 15 minority students interested in math and science starts on the 21st. Then its a program especially for minority students on the 24th and the Class of 2014 orientation on th 28th. We start classes on September 1st. But thats not important. I have far too much free time. All I do is go on Facebook and study for my placement exams. We did have required reading, but Im almost finished with The Dew Breaker. Im not exactly a bibliophile. I do like reading, but I prefer young adult fiction. I know I need to read more college-level books. I just dont know what. Im double concentrating majoring in Cognitive Neuroscience and Psychology and Im pre-med. Ive read some books about depression and eating disorders The Best Little Girl in the World, Prozac Nation, Wasted, a memoir. I need some suggestions. My classmates are so much more well read than I. I need some books to read to prepare for college.
Answer: This might sound really boring, but I have a friend who was pre-med for neuroscience and read textbooks, yes, you did read that correctly. I dont know the titles, but I know he wanted to get a leg up in the field and started reading them. He also had this little book that could fit in a med coat pocket as well again, wish I knew the title but ask anyone in the field and they should know, its a popular book. Try emailing your advisor and see what that person tells you. I dont know anything about MCATs really, but from what Ive heard its never too early to start studying unless most of the stuff you need to know for it is taught in the beginning of undergrad.

Are global warming deniers a liability to the conservative cause?
This is the headline of a National Post article today - "Bad science: Global-warming deniers are a liability to the conservative cause". http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2010/07/15/bad-science-global-warming-deniers-are-a-liability-to-the-conservative-cause/ I believe the National Post is a very conservative Canadian newspaper which has previously been very vocal on behalf of the AGW denialist movement - perhaps our Canadian answerers can confirm this. Most of the article rails against AGW denier conspiracy theories, reliance on the blogosphere, the absurdity of climategate, etc. But the main points are summed up here: "The conviction that global warming is some sort of giant intellectual fraud now has become a leading bullet point within mainstream North American conservatism; and so has come to bathe the whole movement in its increasingly crankish, conspiratorial glow." "Rants and slogans may help conservatives deal with the emotional problem of cognitive dissonance. But they arent the building blocks of a serious ideological movement. And the impulse toward denialism must be fought if conservatism is to prosper in a century when environmental issues will assume an ever greater profile on this increasingly hot, parched, crowded planet. Otherwise, the movement will come to be defined — and discredited — by its noisiest cranks and conspiracists." Do you agree with the National Posts conclusions that deniers are a liability to the conservative cause? And what do you think of the Posts radical shift from supporting AGW denial to condemning it. DrM - "it has not been done." Yes, it has. Heres just one example of many. http://www.cgd.ucar.edu/ccr/publications/meehl_additivity.pdf
Answer: In the Canadian context, yes climate change denial is a political liability. We have a minority Conservative government that is trying to increase its base in vote rich Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia. Quebec is a major hydro producer and also has significant investments in green technologies. Quebec wants environmental legislation because it recognizes that a disproportionate share of the economic benefit, and relative competitive advantage, will flow to Quebec. Ontario is really two provinces: a densely populated south with a manufacturing economy and a sparsely populated north and west with a resource based economy. Southern Ontario has the largest single population block in the country and has traditionally voted Liberal as a means to dominate national politics and funnel wealth generated in the regions through Toronto. Ontario has a significant manufacturing industry dominated by the auto sector which is declining in importance. Hence, Ontario sees its future manufacturing wind turbines rather than autos. Small c conservative ideas appeal to the business instincts of Ontario, which has enabled Conservatives to gain a bridgehead which they are seeking to expand. Rising electricity bills and abnormally warm winters in southern Ontario forced the national Conservative party to re-think its environmental policies. In Ontario the Conservative challenge is to serve the long term interests of helping business evolve to the next generation economy while appealing to a large enough fraction of the Liberal mob to gain a plurality of votes. British Columbia is the most polarized politically with three major parties competing nearly equally for votes. If the Liberals in Ontario and BC like green policies then the Conservative government is willing to throw them a few bones to tease away enough votes to win a Conservative majority. I live in the small-c conservative rural prairie heartland. In my constituency the Conservative candidate won more than 70% of the vote including mine with the rest split between 3 other parties. In two nearby constituencies the Greens came second to the Conservatives. The best way for Conservatives to shut out the Liberals locally is to appeal to a segment of the Green vote. The center of climate change denial is oil-rich, but vote poor Alberta. The Conservative party of Canada has more votes than any other party, but needs greener policies to win an absolute majority. The lunatic denier fringe frankly is not helpful and leaders in the Conservative party know this. The Conservatives are seeking economically responsible green options and are funding R&D to find viable policy options. I personally prefer the Conservative concept of developing sound environmentally friendly technologies and building profitable companies around them. I am happy to participate on both as a scientist and the majority shareholder in one of these companies. I voted Conservative in the last election even though the Liberal plan for a carbon tax would have given my company between $2 million and $3 million annually in carbon credits. I found the Liberal plan to use the tax to fund massive social programs anathema and voted for my principles social and fiscal conservative over my economic interest. DrM: I invite you to compare the national debt as share of GDP, current budget deficit as share of GDP, balance of trade, bank tier 1 capitalization, access to health care and unemployment rate between my country and yours. Most Americans wish they could "suffer" the way Canadians "suffer".

Right-wing female politician Smart Women?
I heard that women should have some sort of "special trait or kind" in their cerebral system if they want to beat us on every level. Not just some kind of emotional ability or hormone testosterone but also a shape in their brain which gives and delivers an ability to defeat ha ha.. or at least to compete male beings. And then i just found an article in a science magazine that a right-wing conservative margaret thatcher former british prime minister who was active during the end of cold war had a "different form" in her left-side cerebral hemisphere that mostly only owns by men. So, like we all know that margaret thatcher was one of the most distinguished and highly respectable leader in her era a key player during the downfall of communism in soviet and domestic recovery in economy,etc..etc You must have wondered how come that she a woman could have an ability to tackle many difficult issues? Well, she definitely got something special and guess what? youre right, she does. I forgot what is it called but one sure thing : it what make us become more capable of everything not confined nor limited and it stores in our brain system , ever since it was the center of all cognitive-process that resulted in our behavior and manner So, aside from a sense that all those brilliant ladies must have a thing in common than doesnt own by most of women, i also just realized that most of them are right-winger. Ok, check this out : Margaret Thatcher Ex-British PM, Condolezza Rice Former US secretary of state , Tzipi Livni Leader of Kadima Party in Knesset, Israel, Angela Merkel Current german Chancellor, etc See? None of them are liberal mess who does nothing but ranting. But conservatives who are much more "in the right order", to carry on something which have nicely shaped and been proven to be a successful policy over decades, instead of revolutionize an old formula. And also sometimes they blew me away with their intelligent speech and their approach to face a certain subject. What do u guys think?
Answer: I dont care much about book-smart. I care about people with common sense, who roll up their sleeves and get er done. The gals in the Conservative movement have what the guys ironically dont - balls. And the Leftists are scared to death of them.
