Ska is probably my favorite genre of music. i cant take my fathers behavior any longer?
my father has always wanted to be a writer. well, he also wanted to be a genius scientist, a wizard doctor and i dont know what else. That wouldnt be much of a problem if he could pursue his hobbies and let me get on with my life. he has managed to write three novels he wants me to proofread, correct and translate, seeing that his idea involves getting his books published in english, which is not his first language. i want to point out its fiction hes writing, not a reference book how can you write a novel in a language youre not fully comfortable with? anyhoozle, he wont stop bugging me and doesnt seem to understand that i have neither the time nor the desire to douse his tedious writings in red ink. to make matters worse, he told me his novels would be published for sure, because, as he claims, he met a person holding a senior position at a publishing company and that said person showed a keen interest in his works but told him they would have to be in english in order to be published. i know this person is the editor of a dictionary and i really dont think they have so much influence as to decide whether a book should be published or not. my father also said this person told him to hand in three novels as a trilogy would be more likely to be extremely successful. when i stepped in to reason with him, he started ranting on about how i was stupid and that his books would make him a lot of money, if only i decided to cooperate. now its common knowledge its extremely difficult to become wealthy by writing novels, unless you write in a specific genre which has proved to be highly popular sci-fi, chick lit etc. my fathers writing is definitely nothing like that and i really cant see him being a commercially successful writer in any way. the whole trilogy thing sounds weird, as does the fact that he met someone and they accepted his novels straightaway, although one of them is not in english, the second is in broken english and the third is still in the process of being finished. dan brown can rely on having his book published while still writing it, but then thats dan brown. its the old adage that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. trouble is my father never wants to hear the truth. knowing him, he probably heard what he wanted to hear from this person and then put his own spin on the whole thing. i am now thinking of severing all my ties with him which would not be hard as we dont even live in the same country. my mother passed away two years ago and i have no brothers or sisters, so i am pretty much free where family ties are concerned. i just dont want to waste my time doing something i know is desultory when there are other, constructive things i could be doing. thanks for reading, thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. i know the whole thing sounds ridiculous, but unfortunately my nerves cant cope any longer.
Answer: you did,nt say how old he is, maybe he is a bit bonkers, [dementia] give him a list of publishers, and let him get on with it..if no one wants to know, [publish]. and you are in the firing line, he will end up blaming you if the books are rejected, and if you take the time to edit them[red pen and all],he will still blame you cause you did,nt edit them rifght..so either way you can,t win.. he sounds a bit selfish, and self centred.. tell him you are off to climb a mountain, or something, and there are no phones where you are going, and he won,t be able to reach you for 6 months.. i,d be heading for the hills if he was my father.
