Looking for a NY Times Best Seller in the mystery genre?
For English, were required to read a book that is specifically a NY Times best seller; a book by a best selling author is not acceptable. As far as my search has gone, Ive not been successful. Anyways, Im looking for an NY Times Best Seller in the mystery genre, preferably one with a realistic plot. I also would like any supernatural book, but Id prefer to stay away from books with many cliches-- something that offers a different perspective from most modern day young adult novels as my reading experience extends not too far. Oh yeah, any Pulitzer Prize winner is also acceptable. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer: Most popular literary works have made the NY Times Bestseller list at one time or another. I would ask if the book has to be a current bestseller or if it can be a past best seller. I have provided you a link with the lists from last Sundays paper. The Stieg Larsson books are very popular but I have not read them yet. If you can do a past best seller, then check out the second link. It lists popular authors that have made the list. Once selected, the authors info page opens with the titles that appeared on list. Some authors you may like are Dean Koontz, Stephen King, John Grisham, and John Updike. The book Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is very good too, its about a young boy and his experience with 9/11. The last link is the Pulizter winners. I think you like The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay and the book A Confederacy of Dunces

Help me check this not so long paragraph : grammar, spelling, and tense right?
Help me check this not so long paragraph : grammar, spelling, and tense right? In the Introduction to They Say I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein offer templates for the intention of helping students voice their opinions in a more intellectual and eloquent way. Despite some criticisms that the templates provided hinder creativity, both Graff and Birkenstein firmly asserts that their writing templates actually help peoples writings become more original. The authors, in order to maintain and back up their arguments, insist that “even the most creative forms of expression depend on established patterns and structures.” To further prove their point, Birkenstein and Graff cites several examples in which people, who have been deemed as creative, use established structures. One of their many examples mentions that songwriters, too, depend on a time-honored verse-chorus-verse pattern. In sum, their perspective is that templates can actually improve peoples ability to write effectively. ---------------- ..." for the intention of helping students ..." ----- is "of" the right phrase? or is it grammatically or structurally incorrect? .."which people, who have been deemed ..." ------ who whom? is this right? thanks so much ♥

Answer: Your first question - for the intention of helping students should be ‘with the intention of helping students… Your second question - .."which people, who have been deemed ..." would be correct. ‘Who is the subject of the subordinate clause, had it been the object it would have been whom. For example, ‘the headmaster chose people, whom he had known previously… In their introduction to “They Say I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing”, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein offer templates with the intention of helping students to voice their opinions in a more intellectual and eloquent way. Despite some criticisms that the templates provided hamper creativity, both Graff and Birkenstein firmly assert that their writing templates genuinely help people make their writings more imaginative. The authors, in order to maintain and support their arguments, insist that “even the most creative forms of expression depend on established patterns and structures.” To further prove their point, Birkenstein and Graff cite several examples in which people, who are generally deemed creative, use established structures. One of their many examples mentions that songwriters too depend on a time-honoured verse-chorus-verse pattern. In short, their perspective is that templates can indeed improve a persons ability to write effectively. Note: Watch out for using verbs in the singular when your subject is plural.

Can you find something unusual about this game?
It involves a published author. He mentioned this incident in one of his books -- inconveniently without the date, but I tracked it down. He claims it may be unique in baseball history -- certainly it is extremely rare. If anyone knows about another, please inform. 28-July-1975, Phillies 5 - @Pirates 2. You can find it in either version linked below. Retrosheet: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1975/B07280PIT1975.htm BR.com: http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/PIT/PIT197507280.shtml Jay Johnstone, Phillies RF in the game, writes this in his first memoir, "Temporary Insanity": Maybe Im just getting old. How come nobody steals buses or airplanes anymore? And how come nobody tries to pick a man off first base while playing right field? Thats right, right field. If youre scoring at home, make that a 2-9 putout. For neophytes, that means the catcher threw a baseball to the rightfielder, who tagged out the base runner. I was the rightfielder, and to my knowledge, its the only time the play has ever been made in major league baseball history. Hey, its a sandlot play. The rightfielder is supposed to catch fly balls, not pick guys off first base. But Ive always had one philosophy about defense: You cheat, lie, steal or do anything you can to get the other guy out. Principal characters in our historic 2-9 pickoff: Johnny Oates was the Phillies catcher, Dick Allen was at first base, Dave Cash at second, I was in right field, ... ... and Frank Taveras of the Pirates was the base runner. Bruce Kison was the hitter, and he was trying to sacrifice bunt. Allen was charging the bunt, and because second baseman Cash was so far away, Taveras figured he could take a giant lead. But he forgot about me. So did the Pittsburgh first base coach, Jose Pagan. Taveras was watching the first baseman, Pagan was watching the second baseman, and nobody was watching me except Oates, who wasnt sure he could believe what he was seeing. Hes seeing this wild-eyed rightfielder running full-speed toward first base. Naturally, he reacts. His throw hit me in full stride at first base, and Taveras was a dead duck. It took the Bucs out of an inning and helped us win an important game. ----- I read this and Johnstones second memoir, Over The Edge years ago. It took me a while to find the section, but then only a few minutes with Retrosheet to identify the game, something not available when Johnstone wrote this. So cool to see that rare a play in a box score. Ive never heard of another 2-9 putout. Johnstones books are out of print, but check your local used bookstore and pick up either one, theyre hilarious. Thats "Temporary Insanity" and "Over The Edge".

Answer: I think I caught it on my second go-around: "Taveras Picked off 1B C-RF" A pickoff at first base from the catcher to the right fielder?

Fantasy novel lovers: what would you like to see in a fantasy novel?
Okay, lets pretend your favourite author was asking you this question, theyre about to write a book. And they want their fans to suggest things that they would like to be added... For example.. Harry Potter lovers wanting to see less death. More creative creatures. and no love stories. But this book your favourite author is going to write is something fresh. A brand new Series of heroes/villains. Pretend all of this. So.... What would you tell them to write more/less about? I hope this all makes sense. Haha.

Answer: If you want to create fresh ideas, the best way to do it is when you are planning your novel dont let the ideas of others influence what you decide to put in, think of your own ideas rather than rewriting theirs. Thats the easy way, recycling the old rather than inventing the new. When I first decided to write I wrote all I could imagine, discovering that what I could imagine turned out to be fantasy novel. But at the time I hadnt known what a published fantasy novel looked like, so i didnt have the ideas of old fogging my mind demanding to be rewritten. Ive yet to come across anything resembling my ideas. But here are some ideas for what you are actually asking. Im sick of fantasy novels involving the political feuds of elves, wizards, dwarfs and men. Especially when the elves are these fair, willowy folk of the forest and the dwarfs are bearded little men of the rock and dirt. At least if youre deciding to do this, mix it up a bit, eh? Made up human creatures FASCINATE me and "made up" does not me creating a critter with a human body but a shark head, it means some special breed of human that fits nicely into the story. And I wish there werent so many minor characters with complex names thrown in just for the heck of it till a point where your brain get spun around and you end up having a hard time remembering the important ones in the onrush. I like it when basically only the characters with speaking roles get mentioned. And I dont like it when the old man the main character has known all their lives turns out to be a wizard. Like, jeez, who else saw it coming? EVERYONE And I wish everything didnt get treated like life and death situations. I wish the characters would try to find fun and humor in more things. And if there arent any real places for silly or childish fun in the whomping drama of the plot, I wish some would at least be placed in the beginning to add some perspective later on for carefree times past and in the end as to end things on a fun note. Something so simple as having the characters talk about being naughty as a child, or how they got a scar can always be cute. And I wish that the female love interests werent such narcisistic btches, leading the guy on only to treat him coldly for some reason they keep to themselves. I want CHEMISTRY, not baggage. I like it when there are heavy roles of magical objects, rather than spells or persons, like an invisibility cloak, a sceptor of great power, a magic ring and a thousand other things, both harmful, useful and ridiculous. I like it when magic and things are underground things, not mainstream commodities, and they are a secret of the main characters that is always at risk of being found out. I hate it when the characters are despicable assassins or theives or pirates who hate themselves and with no redeaming qualities. I like my main characters noble and just.

Anyone else amazed at Stephen Hawking new conclusion on god?
With the aging population, and all the recent religious BS never expected him to come out on the side of reality. For those that may have missed it, in a new book he co-authored, he feel god did not create the universe.

Answer: Probably it was because of "all the recent religious BS", that he took a position. And what he said was he didnt feel god was required. When reading a mathematician, apy close attention to the language. They tend to be precise in what they say. Read it that way.

What exactly is comic-con?
Im Australian so I dont know a lot about it. Ive read stuff about it on the internet but Im still confused. Most of the time websites talk about all the celebrities that are there, but on the official website it only mentions writers and authors. Are both there or have I been looking at two separate things?

Answer: There are many Comic-Cons but the biggest and most talked about one is the San Diego Comic-Con. It is different things to different people because it contains a variety of pop culture, including but not limited to: Comics, Cartoons, Books, Art, Sci-fi, Anime, Gaming, TV shows, & Movies; and some people dress up as their favorite characters from those. There are advanced and exclusive releases of comics, toys, books, games, collectables & other merchandise. Exclusive previews and full screens of upcoming TV Shows & Movies. It is a place to meet new and old friend with similar interests. Over 400 panels/events held in rooms that vary in size from 100 to 6,500 seats. And a lot lot more. It does contain both writers/authors and celebrities and more. I would suggest you look at their 2010 programming schedule for some more info: http://www.comic-con.org/cci/cci10_prog_thu.php Some of the celebrities at Comic-Con 2010: Harrison Ford, Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, Sigourney Weaver, Angelina Jolie, Milla Jovovich, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, Seth Rogen, Nicolas Cage, Kevin Smith, Nathan Fillion, Liv Tyler, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr, Michelle Rodriguez, Michael Cera, Daniel Craig, Seth Green, Matt Groening. Some people think Comic-Con is suppose to just be a comic book convention but it has NEVER been just that. The original 1970 logo has the text "Comic Art, Films, Science Fiction" and Star Wars was being promoted there in 1976. Source: the book "Comic-Con: 40 Years of Artists, Writers, Fans, & Friends". You could also get that book if you want to know even more about Comic-Con. .

Do you think atheism requires faith?
I asked a question like 10 minutes ago. One of the users who goes by the name "Desert Wisdom" responded to me with this post: "Atheism requires faith, its [sic] not organized like religion, but there are atheist books, churches, camps, social gatherings, popular icons, authors, etc. "It has qualties of a religion in as much as faith and organizarion [sic] go." What? Atheist churches? Where has this guy been? Oh, right—hes been living in the desert for too long. Personally, I dont see how subscribing to atheism takes any sort of faith. What do all of you think?

Answer: If they say they are 100 percent sure there is no God they are going by Faith.
